AFTERSCHOOL PROGRAM

Support us for our
Afterschool program

Our after-school program provides a nurturing environment for disadvantaged children to thrive beyond the school day. We provide academic support, life skills training, and character development, instilling confidence and encouraging initiative.

Special attention is given to emphasizing each child’s inherent worth and potential. The program fosters a sense of community, friendship and mutual support, as well as opportunities for mentorship and leadership. Despite the challenges these children face, we believe in their ability to excel and make a positive impact on society.

Join us as we turn trials into triumphs and dreams into reality.

Our children

We help disadvantaged children aged 5-17 from low-income families, facing socio-economic challenges and emotional struggles. Often victims of bullying or isolation, they are in desperate need of academic support, life skills training, and a nurturing, affirming environment.

What we offer

Monday through Thursday from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m., we offer interactive learning sessions and heartwarming chats with mentors. If we have money, we provide a light meal. But it’s more than just food and learning; it’s about nourishing souls with spiritual guidance and abundant love.

What we give

We provide each child with the essentials for their education and well-being. At the beginning of the year, we purchase a sturdy backpack and fill it with textbooks, two notebooks for each subject, and a pencil case with necessary stationery.
In winter, we provide some of the children with warm clothes from thrift stores.
We provide medicine for the sick children.
If we have enough money, we provide a small meal every day.

Our efforts

Through our program, we’ve seen children who once lacked confidence transform into confident, outgoing young leaders. Their growth is evident in all areas – academically, socially and emotionally. They now take initiative, show kindness, and are resilient. Parents have evolved as well, becoming more involved in their children’s education. They advocate for their children, overcome their own challenges, and better understand the nuances of positive parenting. This shared journey of growth has resulted in stronger family bonds and a greater sense of community empowerment.

Our children often have a hard time at school. They have to sit in the back row and are ignored by the teachers. They are often bullied by their classmates.

Through our program, some of our children now sit in the front row!

Dritan

The Story of Dritan

Like the children in his neighborhood Dritan faced the same trials and tribulations – poverty, lack of education, broken homes. But unlike many of the other kids, Dritan did not have an anger problem. His challenge was a shell, a fortress he had built around himself that made him extremely reserved and detached from the world.

He was a solitary figure, often lost in the crowd at school. Despite his youth, he wore a veil of seriousness as heavy as the weight he carried in his heart. He was the target of ridicule and without friends. Every day was a struggle, every smile a luxury he couldn’t afford.

Recognizing his plight, our team chose to persevere. To us, every child is a beacon of hope, a diamond in the rough waiting to be discovered and polished. We knew the value of persistence, and we saw Dritan not as a silent child, but as a young soul in need of recognition and warmth.

We spent time with Dritan, encouraging him to express himself, nurturing his faith and teaching him about his divine value. We believed that every child, including Dritan, was a masterpiece sculpted by God, a wonderful creation made in His image. Our teachings and discipleship were not just sessions, but a catalyst for profound transformation.

Little by little, Dritan began to change. The dark boy began to show signs of warmth and the serious facade began to melt away. Dritan began to emerge as a young man of initiative and compassion. A sense of responsibility began to shape his actions, and he began to reach out to his peers, guiding them and initiating activities.

His academic performance improved significantly, his relationships with teachers blossomed, and he became an active participant in our after-school program. Dritan stepped up as a mentor, using his experience and newfound confidence to guide younger students. He even began to help with school projects and, in time, developed a circle of good friends.

Dritan’s transformation has been nothing short of inspiring. He is now preparing to take a significant step forward – becoming the first of our children to attend university. While his family situation still presents challenges, his faith has become his shield, his guide in navigating the turbulent waters of life. His story is a testament to the power of perseverance, faith and belief in one’s divine worth.

Elira

The Story of Elira

Elira* had barely started first grade when the pressure was already on: after just two weeks she was expected to write full letters. But she couldn’t. When she came to class without homework, her teacher didn’t offer help—she just drew a big red question mark in Elira’s notebook.

For many children, learning letters begins in kindergarten, or at home with parents. But Elira never had that chance. Her parents, who themselves struggled with reading and writing, couldn’t guide her. And since she hadn’t gone to kindergarten, she entered school already behind.

That’s how it so often begins for Roma children: pushed to the back row of the classroom, where teachers overlook them and classmates mock them. The Albanian school system rarely makes space for the individual needs of students. And so, step by step, children like Elira not only fall further behind academically—they also internalize a painful message: you don’t matter, your efforts aren’t valued.

But Elira’s story doesn’t end there. Over the past year, she has learned to write with us. Every new letter, every word she masters is a small victory. Her journey toward becoming a strong, confident young woman, respected in society, is far from finished. It’s made up of countless small, sometimes difficult steps.

And we hope to walk beside her for many of them.

Liri is one of the girls who has been coming to our community since she was very young. But as she grew older, her behavior changed dramatically. When she joined the afterschool program this year, she hardly spoke to anyone and treated the teachers poorly. She never asked for help and kept her distance, cold and closed off from everyone.

We made a conscious effort to draw closer to her. Slowly, Liri began to feel the love we had for her. Step by step, she started to change—today, when she arrives, she greets us with a hug, asks for help with her homework, and her whole attitude has been transformed.

When Ben first joined us, homework was the last thing on his mind. Every afternoon, as soon as he walked in, he would slam his schoolbag onto the table, throw himself angrily into a chair, and fill the room with noise and unrest.

Teaching the other children became nearly impossible, and it took all our strength and patience just to get through the day. It was the same scene, over and over again.

But we never gave up on Ben. We stayed close to him, showing him kindness and love—even when it was hard—because Ben mattered to us. Deep down, we knew there was more to his story than his outbursts.

And slowly, something began to change. Like the others, Ben started to open up. Today, when he arrives, he doesn’t storm in—he comes with a smile. He greets us with a hug, and then sits down with joy and motivation to do his homework. The boy who once resisted everything now radiates a sense of belonging and determination.

Ben’s journey reminds us that patience, love, and consistency can open doors no punishment ever could.
